Leggett & Platt to close High Point plant

Bedding and furniture components manufacturer Leggett & Platt is closing its plant in High Point, North Carolina, a move that will impact about 158 jobs.

The company filed a WARN Act notice with the North Carolina Department of Commerce announcing the permanent closure of its plant at 1629 Blandwood Drive. The effective date of the closure is July 25.

The move is part of a restructuring plan the company announced earlier this year aimed at achieving “improved performance and profitable growth.”

In that plan, the company said it would consolidate certain locations across its Bedding Products segment that reduce its manufacturing and distribution footprint of 50 facilities to about 30-35 facilities.

“Creating a new and more efficient regional distribution network will support our ability to maintain sufficient manufacturing capacity in fewer, higher-output facilities to effectively serve our customers and better align with anticipated future market demand,” the company said. “These actions should allow us to integrate our specialty foam and innerspring capabilities while maintaining market-leading service and product quality levels and improving overall efficiency.”

The company also said it would refocus its Bedding Products business “to focus on innovative, higher-value content, driven by customer and end-consumer needs. We are proud of our long history of providing product solutions our customers value and see further opportunities to do so in both innersprings and specialty foam, from components to private-label finished goods.”

It added that these initiatives were expected to achieve profitable growth through expanded product capabilities and increased content at attractive price points, as well as “reduce costs and create shareholder value.”

The company also shared the following statement with Home News Now to put the closing and its impact on the workers in the proper context and perspective:

“In January 2024, Leggett & Platt implemented a restructuring plan primarily focused on our Bedding Products business. This plan is intended to better align our business with an evolving competitive landscape and position our company for profitable growth. As part of these initiatives, we are consolidating our manufacturing footprint to better align capacity with regional demand and enhance our efficiency. We recognize the impact that these actions will have on our colleagues at our innerspring manufacturing facility in High Point, and we take these decisions very seriously. We are committed to treating colleagues exiting our business with compassion and respect. We will provide them with support and resources as they transition to the next step in their careers, including identifying career opportunities at nearby Leggett & Platt facilities.”
