Bedhead Marketing has appointed industry veteran Brent Batterman as vice president of business development and education, a new role that aims to expand the marketing agency’s capabilities into sales and leadership education.
Batterman’s extensive and varied experience was instrumental in the launch of nearly every successful brand at Mattress Firm, including Beautyrest, Purple, Nectar, Private Brands and Tempur-Pedic, among others. He was central to the development, planning, execution, and implementation of the financing waterfall, a pioneering service in the mattress retail sector.

Furthermore, Batterman’s involvement in 15 mergers and acquisitions was crucial in expanding Mattress Firm’s reach across the United States. “I always say I am the best trainer in the room until Batterman walks in,” says Stephen Ferguson, co-founder and president of BedHead. “He is flat out the best trainer in our industry and exactly the right type of mind for BedHead.”
In addition to his professional achievements, Batterman and his wife faced significant health challenges in 2022, including life-saving heart surgery for him and a cancer diagnosis for his wife. Both have since recovered well, expressing gratitude for the support from the mattress industry.
This personal journey underscores Batterman’s resilience and the broad support network within the industry. Batterman’s story, marked by both professional success and personal challenges, highlights his integral role within Mattress Firm and the wider mattress retail sector.
“I feel like all the success that I’ve had is because of so many special people in so many different areas of the business who took the time to teach me what they knew,” Batterman says. “I did the best job I could to be a sponge and improve my skills. But now, I just want to pay that forward.”
In his new role, Batterman will bring a new service and resource to Bedhead Marketing’s tool belt, as he will be working closely with retail and manufacturing partners on sales and leadership training, team and culture development, quality control, building custom sales process, retail floor merchandising, product launches and event management.
Batterman adds, “What I think is neat about Bedhead is that we can tailor stuff and fit to what your company needs. You may not need all of our services, but there could be just one small thing that could make a huge impact to your success. We can provide that, and I think that’s a unique resource.”
Throughout his career at Mattress Firm, Batterman contributed to personnel development, having personally coached and mentored over 50 individuals. His roles extended to leading new-hire training, sales process improvement and enhancing customer shopping experiences by integrating diverse buying processes. He also played a pivotal role in leadership, vendor and partner training, and was a keynote speaker at leadership conferences for several years.
