If cost was not the driving factor, how would you design the ultimate pressure-relieving bed?
That’s the idea that set Bob Duncan, founder and chairman of Artisan Lane (formerly American Leather), on a journey to create Ciridian, an ultra-luxury intelligent sleep system that continually adapts to the sleeper in real time.
Duncan tells Bedding News Now that Ciridian is nearly 10 years in the making, and he’s excited to finally launch the technology.

Like many bedding companies, Ciridian started because Duncan had lower back pain that caused him to stay up all night. The technology started as a passion project, according to Duncan, and he designed it for himself at first.
“The prototyping phase took a long time because we wanted to get everything just right,” he explained. “During Covid we moved everything to Dallas, and we now have a fully commercialized version of the product.”
Because the bed was initially being built for Duncan, he set out to build the best possible bed system, regardless of cost or constraints. That idea held and led to a customizable bed that’s 100% bespoke. Customers select from premium materials, leather options and custom detailing through an immersive design experience that draws directly on Duncan’s American Leather background.
The technology includes 400 independently controlled smart springs that continuously adjust their firmness throughout the night via a proprietary algorithm.
Intelligent Pressure Relief equalizes pressure across every spring, eliminating pressure points and distributing the sleeper’s weight evenly throughout the night. A dual-zone configuration allows couples to have their own personalized sleep settings independently.

Live pressure mapping displays how the technology reads and responds to the sleeper’s body in real time. It also has unwind features, including “Rock” mode, which gently sways the sleeper side to side to ease the transition into sleep.
The company offers white-glove installation and hands-on tutorials with every purchase, and the Ciridian team returns annually to refresh all comfort materials and perform a full system tune-up.
“It essentially minimizes restlessness, much of like if you sit in a chair for a long time, you subconsciously adjust after a while,” Duncan said. “You’re doing that at night as well as you experience pressure. The more interruptions to your sleep quality, the more it affects your sleep, and so the main goal of the product is to normalize or equalize pressure, eliminate pressure points, reduce restlessness and improve the quality of your sleep.”
The company is starting small, focusing on the Dallas area for right now. “It’s a technical product, so we wanted to make sure we can handle capacity,” Duncan said.
The technology also comes with a premium price tag — from $75,000 to $124,000 — putting Ciridian in the ring with other ultra-lux companies like Hastens, Vispring and Literie Laurier.

Duncan explained that though the idea is fairly straightforward, the execution presented several difficult challenges, including making the bed silent. Regardless, he said he enjoyed the process of creating Ciridian and is excited to see where it goes.
“We envision there is probably going to be a fair bit of word of mouth once we sort of get an initial customer base established,” he added. “It’s a very niche, high-end market. “
