With Labor Day arguably one of the biggest holidays for mattress sales and promotions, we looked across the internet this weekend to see how some top bedding retailers were approaching the important holiday sales period.
As recently reported, consumer confidence is down, inflation is still causing people to hold their wallets tight, and many retailers are still trying to work through excess stock.
The bedding industry is known for its marketing and promotional sales during summer holidays, so take a look at a few takes on Labor Day from across the country.
As might be expected, the nation’s largest mattress retailer, Mattress Firm, is offering several “Best Sale of the Year” deals and has separated them into neat categories. Some products are up to 60% off, with bestsellers up to 50% off, which makes these some of the most competitive deals on the market this Labor Day.
Sleep Number has a countdown clock on its website and is promoting free delivery and setup. It also immediately makes clear that it offers 0% financing for 36 months.
The company is doubling down on its financing message, which makes sense during a time when consumers aren’t spending as much and are looking for alternatives. Notably, the company uses price listing in addition to percentages which helps drive the message home and connect with the customer on a deeper level — people care more about real money than percentages.
At Mattress Warehouse, customers will find deals like buy one, get one free on select Kingsdown mattress sets, save up to $1,200 on select Serta iDirections X-series mattress sets, and buy one, get one 50% off select pillows and protectors. The company will offer free adjustable bases and free sleep bundles, as well as up to 70% off storewide savings.
They also tout Kingsdown’s bedMATCH system for suggesting the perfect mattress and also add that customers can select from brands such as Aireloom, Cheswick Manor, Comfort Essentials, Kingsdown, Mattress 2.0, Royal, Sealy, Serta, Stearns & Foster and Tempur-Pedic.
American Mattress’ Labor Day sales focus on free adjustable bases, pillows and delivery with a minimum purchase of $799. Save 50%-70% off discontinued or floor model sample mattresses from our top mattress brands.
In terms of financing, the company has partnered with Synchrony to offer customers 0% APR for 36 months on purchases of $1,499 or more made with a Synchrony card.
Tempur-Pedic’s Labor Day “Sitebuster” focuses on online purchases and saves shoppers 40% on the Tempur-Essential Mattress + Ease Power Base. When you click the link, it gives you two steps:
- Select any size Tempur-Essential Mattress + Ease Power Base bundle and add it to your cart
- Savings will automatically be added to your cart
With large, bold buttons saying “Shop Now” and “See Details,” the company kept things minimal and easy to understand. They also used actually numbers to signify savings and didn’t make things too flashy.
Serta-Simmons is also pushing sales online with several deals customers can take advantage of:
- Save up to $1,000 on an Arctic Mattress when paired with select adjustable bed frame bases.
- Save $100 on select Perfect Sleeper mattresses over $999.
- Save up to $900 on a Serta iComfortECO mattress when paired with select adjustable bed frame bases.
- Save 15% on Mattress in a Box Beds.
Purple is touting its Labor Day sale as its “biggest sale ever” with up to $900 off a mattress and a smart base.
The company’s website homepage lists nine models included in the sale, and scrolling down we find that the sale is also doubling as a Back to School sale, with the company offering kids mattresses, pillows and sheets. Purple is also offering teachers + students 10% off, every day.
Known for its clever marketing, Casper’s zzz-day weekend saves consumers 20% off every product on the company’s site. While still a typical sale, this promotion differs from others in that it’s extremely simple — pick something and it’s 20% off — and it’s not flashy. For example, in addition to the 20% off, some items are up to 50% off, but Casper is not shouting it from all corners like some others.
Also featuring a countdown clock, Nectar is offering 33% off everything on the site for new customers. However, the company states that this offer is valid for one-time, first-time email sign-up purchasers only — i.e. first-time customers.
The New Customer Offer provides 33% off their first purchase of select Nectar Sleep mattress styles, “any products described in the promotional materials as eligible for the New Customer Offer and subsequent mattress purchases made within 30 days of the initial purchase.”
For returning customers, the company has two options:
- For twin and twin XL mattresses: one (1) pillow, one (1) mattress protector, and one (1) sheet set containing one (1) pillowcase, one (1) nonfitted sheet and one (1) fitted sheet. Total value of three hundred and seventy-four dollars ($375) (USD).
- For full, queen, king, California king and split king mattresses: two (2) pillows, one (1) mattress protector, and one (1) sheet set containing two (2) pillowcases, one (1) nonfitted sheet and one (1) fitted sheet. Total value of four hundred and ninety-nine dollars ($500) (USD).
Saatva’s Labor Day promotion to save up to $600 off and get up to 0% APR with Affirm ended Aug 31, well before Labor Day, which could mean the company was trying to get people’s attention before other promotions went live and cut out the noise.
For the holiday, the company offered various amounts off of certain purchases. For example, $200 off purchases between $975 and $1,499 at the low end, and $500 off $4,500 or more at the high end. They also added that customers can save an extra $100 off an Adjustable Base Plus or bed frame with a mattress purchase.
