Welcome to the fifth and final installment of Bedding News Now’s inaugural look at the best mattress retailers across the country. This report profiles bedding standouts in the West.
We developed these reports by inviting industry submissions, combing through the latest installment of the Home News Now 125 Furniture and Bedding Retailers, and then identifying other mattress retailers known for their commitment to the category. After reviewing our candidates with several bedding manufacturers, suppliers and consultants, we arrived at our selections for the five Best In Bedding retailers in each region.
We excluded national mattress retailers like Mattress Firm, which have a strong presence in many regions in the country. We also excluded direct-to-consumer retailers, a growing force in the mattress category. Future reports will examine those other types of retailers. Our focus now is local and regional mattress stars.
The retailers we are saluting are not listed by volume. Our goal is not to simply recognize mattress revenues, although many of these retailers are generating high mattress volumes, but to celebrate the depth of commitment to the mattress category in all sizes of bedding operations, from single-store giants to chains with hundreds of stores. Our selections spotlight brick-and-mortar powerhouses who stand tall in the regions they first began serving years ago — and who continue to embody excellence in mattress retailing today.
We asked leaders from the mattress manufacturing sector and industry consultants to comment on each of our notable mattress retailers.
RC Willey, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, is part of Berkshire Hathaway’s home furnishings group. That group consists of RC Willey, with 10 showrooms; Nebraska Furniture Mart of Omaha, Nebraska; Jordan’s Furniture of East Taunton, Massachusetts; and Star Furniture of Houston.
Why they stand out: “RC Willey has a strong management team,” says David Binke, CEO of King Koil. “The company always does right for its customers. In addition, RC Willey has a very strong sales organization and is very loyal to its vendors.”
Sit ‘n Sleep, based in Gardena, California, is a Southern California retailer operating showrooms selling mattresses, bedding and furniture, as well as an e-commerce site. Top-selling mattress brands include Serta, Sealy, King Koil, Kingsdown, Purple, Tempur-Pedic and Nectar. In May 2024, the company opened a showroom in Westminster, California.
Why they stand out: “Sit ‘n Sleep is a wonderful family business,” says King Koil’s Binke. “The company is extremely charitable in the communities it serves. It has the best sales organization in the mattress category anywhere in the country. Sit ‘n Sleep aggressively promotes its name and its equities, building a tremendous brand and customer loyalty. And the retailer goes out of its way to better serve its customers.”
BedMart, based in Wilsonville, Oregon, is a family-owned business with more than three decades of service. The retailer operates 36 BedMart locations in Oregon and Hawaii. It acquired The Mind’s Eye Interiors company in Maui and has expanded the Mind’s Eye stores to Kauai, Hilo, Kona and in Maui. Key mattress vendors include Tempur-Pedic, Sealy, Kingsdown, King Koil, Qube, Parklane, Sound Sleep and BedTech. The retailer added three locations last year.
Why they stand out: “BedMart is a family-owned retailer,” says Jim Nation, vice president of national sales at South Bay International. “They use exclusive smartMatch diagnostic technology to select the correct mattress for their customers. BedMart features highly trained sleep experts and carries mattress brands like Tempur-Pedic, Kingsdown, Sealy, Parklane, BedTech, Sound Sleep Products and King Koil. The product assortment also includes adjustable bases, pillows, protectors and toppers.”
Mancini’s Sleepworld, based in Livermore, California, was founded in 1969 and operates more than 40 stores in and around the San Francisco Bay area. Its flagship store, in Sunnyvale, California, is still open today. Key mattress brands include Tempur-Pedic, Avocado, Aireloom, Stearns & Foster, Beautyrest, BeautySleep, Sealy, Kluft, Casper, Helix, Kingsdown, Nectar, Serta, Mancini’s and Sleepworld. The retailer also carries a full line of sleep accessories.
Why they stand out: “A premier mattress retailer in the San Francisco Bay area and Northern California, Mancini’s Sleepworld has been dedicated to providing the highest quality sleep solutions for over 50 years,” says Erik Brandt, senior vice president of Western region sales for Serta Simmons Bedding. “The company features excellent leaders providing sleep solutions for every customer in the Bay area.”
Mattress World Northwest, based in Clackamas, Oregon, is a locally owned and operated business with 25 locations in the Northwest. Key mattress brands include Aireloom, Avocado, BedTech, Beautyrest, Dream Cloud, Instant Comfort, King Koil, Kids Pedic, Nectar, Posh+Lavish, Purple, Sealy, Serta, Stearns & Foster, Tempur-Pedic and Pillow Cube. The retailer, which touts a low-price guarantee and a broad offering of sleep technologies, also carries sleep accessories and massage chairs.
Why they stand out: “A family-owned business, Mattress World has been providing friendly service and superior sleep for years,” says Bill Visser, divisional vice president of Pacific West Sales at Serta Simmons Bedding. “Their sales lead, Ryan Bailey, has a passion for putting the customer first, and he’s driving growth across the state of Oregon. Led by Sean Hathaway and recognized as one of Oregon’s Top 10 most philanthropic midsize companies, Mattress World Northwest is not only about saving money for their customers — they are a partner in building stronger, healthier communities.”
