Retail tip: Find inspiration from striking wall displays in Vegas showrooms

I’ve been to the top of windswept K2, one of the world’s tallest and most dangerous mountains. I’ve gazed at the earth shimmering in space. I’ve seen sparkling turquoise waters in a tropical paradise. And I’ve stood on a sandy shore in brilliant sunshine and looked far out to sea.

And I did all of those things in mattress showrooms at the bedding-rich Las Vegas Market. You can, too. If, that is, you take the time to look at more than the plethora of new products that will fill showrooms later this week.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big fan of new products, although sometimes I think we get a bit too carried away with our obsession with the newest shiny thing in bedding showrooms. Yes, new products help drive business on retail floors. But new displays can, too.

Now, as retailers are getting their mattress appointment lists in order, I’m going to highlight some outstanding displays you can see in mattress showrooms later this week and next week. And I ask you to ask yourself an important question: Would these displays help bring excitement to retail floors?

Let’s start with K2, the world’s second-highest mountain (after Mount Everest), and considered a more difficult climb. The name of that majestic mountain graces mattress lines at Kingsdown, which highlights the beds with striking images of K2 on some of its showroom walls. Those pictures would make great conversation starters on retail floors. And great conversations can lead to great sales.

Kingsdown treats the front windows in its showroom as department store windows, making flashy fashion statements there. Make sure to give them a good look.

Want to sell more pillows? Display a wall of pillows in your stores. That great display idea comes from Tempur-Pedic, which will again be showing the wall of pillows it featured last July. The dozens of pillows are eye catching and they make a powerful statement. What a great way to put more emphasis on pillows.

Now let’s go to the beach. Therapedic goes big with a beautiful Tommy Bahama mattress display that takes us straight to the tropics, where palm trees sway in ocean breezes. Those beds look like the perfect place for a nap — or a great night’s sleep. In a nearby display, Therapedic features an arresting image of a woman running on the beach, an orange banner swirling behind her. Wouldn’t you like to have that kind of energy in the morning? And on another wall, Therapedic beds are displayed against a wall that features the earth as seen from space.

All of those Therapedic wall displays will be featured at the upcoming market.

That’s just a quick look at some of the bigger-is-better wall displays you can see in Las Vegas mattress showrooms. Give them some serious thought as you ponder your plans to boost your mattress sales this year. I bet they would bring energy and excitement to retail floors.
