American Mattress has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with estimated assets and debts both in the $1 million to $10 million range. The number of creditors is between 100 and 199.
The sleep specialty chain that operates more than 95 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Florida and Missouri, listed five mattress manufacturers as some of its top unsecured creditors, namely Adventure Mattress, Bedding Industries of America, Customatic Sleep Technologies, Serta/Simmons and Tempur‑Pedic.
In total, they are owed more than $2.06 million and Adventure Mattress, a bedding brand founded in 2023 by Bob Sherman and Barbara Bradford, is listed as the top unsecured creditor with a claim of more than $1.21 million.
Many individual stores remain profitable, according to reports, but struggling locations and unprofitable leases have added to an overall slowdown because of customer uncertainty and expenses from a line reset of a major manufacturer.
In May of 2023, American Mattress acquired the bedding chain US Mattress — which includes 20 stores in Detroit — for an undisclosed amount.
