John Eck steps down as CEO of Mattress Firm following acquisition by Tempur Sealy

Tempur Sealy International announced management changes at Mattress Firm, as John Eck has decided to step down as chief executive officer of the retailer.

The company has entered into a consulting agreement with Eck to ensure a smooth transition. Scott Thompson, chairman and CEO of Tempur Sealy, will act as interim CEO of Mattress Firm during a transition period. The company expects to appoint a new CEO of Mattress Firm within the next six to nine months.

“We thank John for his successful six years at Mattress Firm, leading the business to outperform the market over the period of his leadership,” says Thompson. “I look forward to working with the Mattress Firm leadership team during this transitional period.”

In a LinkedIn post, Eck said that when he joined the company six years ago, Mattress Firm was emerging from the brink of bankruptcy and his mission was clear: work alongside our leadership team and board of directors to transform the business and position it for long-term success.

“Last week, that journey reached a remarkable milestone with the acquisition of Mattress Firm by Tempur Sealy Inc. for ~$5 billion. It has been an honor to serve alongside the Mattress Firm board and investor group, the leadership team and, most importantly, our incredible Sleep Experts — who are the true heroes of this story. I leave deeply impressed by the resilience, passion and culture that define this company.

“The future is bright for Mattress Firm as part of Somnigroup International,” he continues. “This new, vertically integrated company will span approximately 3,000 stores, 30 e-commerce platforms, 71 manufacturing facilities and four state-of-the-art R&D centers worldwide. I have no doubt that under Scott’s leadership, the team will achieve even greater success. I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way.”

The company previously announced it would change its name to Somnigroup International Inc., effective Feb. 18. Mattress Firm, Dreams and Tempur Sealy will operate as decentralized business units under Somnigroup International.
