Dixie Furniture & Mattress closing permanently after 79 years

Dixie Furniture & Mattress prepares for the end of an era after 79 years as a family-owned business and three generations of exceptional service. The company is going out of business and will begin total liquidation of its stores in North Charleston and Walterboro.

Furniture promotional sales specialists Planned Furniture Promotions is handling the going-out-of-business sale events, working closely with the family and staff of Dixie Furniture & Mattress to ensure their customers continue to receive the excellent quality and service the retailer has provided for eight decades.

“The Kirshteins’ commitment to quality and service has been evident in every aspect of the business,” says Tom Liddell, senior vice president of PFP. “As the store enters its final chapter, we’re proud to support them in this transition. This sale is a unique opportunity for shoppers to find incredible values while marking the conclusion of a truly remarkable legacy.”

The Kirshtein family has been serving the Lowcountry for over 100 years. Founder Abe Kirshtein began selling from a horse and buggy on the historic streets of downtown Charleston in 1921. He opened his first furniture store at 533 King St. in 1946. Through his determination, along with his wife, Edith, and their sons, Sammy, Louis and Sol, Dixie Furniture continued to grow.

By 1961, the Kirshteins opened a second store in North Charleston. Over the last 35 years, the third-generation Kirshteins, Stan, Michael and David, took over the business, opening a rent-to-own store called Speedy Rentals, then a third and fourth Dixie Furniture & Mattress in Walterboro and Beaufort.

The Beaufort store was closed in 2004, and more recently the King Street store closed in 2017. Since then, extensive remodeling to the Walterboro and North Charleston stores have kept Dixie Furniture as the leading family furniture business in the Lowcountry.

Dixie Furniture & Mattress opened its going-out-of-business sale to the public on Jan. 16. The two stores liquidating are located at 5550 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston and 303 Robertson Blvd. in Walterboro. Both store buildings are for sale and interested parties may contact Michael or David Kirshtein at (843) 747-5784. For more information on the liquidation sale, visit www.dixiefurniture.com.
