Global leader in adhesives and sealants, Saba, will introduce its new water-based adhesive innovation, which represents a significant advancement for mattress recycling initiatives. The new Sababond 3245 is a polyurethane water-based adhesive designed for roll coating applications and makes its debut at the ISPA Expo, March 10-12, in Orlando, Florida.
In its Expo booth #1460, Saba will feature Sababond 3245, an innovation based on the concept of mono-material design in which the composition of the adhesive is aligned with the substrates being bonded—in this case, polyurethane foam.
“This innovation allows us to match the adhesive chemistry to the foam itself,” said Pieter van Gent, chief technology officer for SABA. “Our goal is to provide the mattress industry with sustainable, recycle-ready solutions without sacrificing mattress comfort or quality.”
A third-party expert in chemical recycling of foam evaluated this new class of adhesive and confirmed that it does not negatively impact chemical foam recycling processes. Testing showed no adverse effects on recycling yield or on the quality of recovered polyols.
“To this point, as an industry, we’ve really only focused on de-bonding as the solution for mattress adhesives as it relates to recycling,” said Jim Turner, CEO of Saba North America. “We believe that mono-material design is another viable path and we’re excited to introduce this technology as an option for designing mattresses for recycling. Additionally, its high yield makes it an extremely cost-effective solution, and we expect many customers will realize a reduction in adhesive costs with Sababond 3245.”
In addition to their space at the ISPA Expo, Saba also invites current and prospective customers to visit its new Technology Center in St. Clair, Michigan. The facility features a full production-scale roll coating system, the only such testing facility of its kind in the world, allowing manufacturers to qualify Sababond 3245 with their own foams without disrupting production.
